Nice Coal Dwan
for two performers
Nice Coal Dwan (2019) is an original site-specific theatrical work for campfire objects significant to a property on Harrigan’s Lane near Boonoo Boonoo in rural NSW, Australia. With Liam Flenady as the comedic fictional Australian character Coal Dwan, I improvised the sounds of billy kettles, iron grates, and pots in a work that subverted the function of barbeque wares. The setting of the performance mimicked what could be typically perceived as a cook up; however, the objects were explored for their different sounds rather than their function of preparing food.
Nice Coal Dwan was premiered in April 2019 at the Easter at the Piano Mill events at Harrigan’s Lane, a day described by the lead character as "beautiful” and “sunny". Video and audio footage was documented by Tangible Media, and special thanks to Bruce and Jocelyn Wolfe for their generous ongoing support.
