Kupka’s Piano ends the year with an ambitious portrait concert of Australian composer Chris Dench. Often associated with the ‘new complexity’ school, Chris Dench’s music is nonetheless not reducible to any particular style, and represents a unique synthesis of influences ranging from renaissance polyphony to jazz to modern science.
The Koerner/Rottle Duo performs at the final 2016 Paint It Red series at Jugglers Art Space.
Jodie performs as a member of the ETERNAL chamber ensemble with vocalist Chris McNulty at the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival.
Kupka’s Piano teams up with soprano Jessica Aszodi to explore what is new in repetition, or what it means to renew the new. Beat Furrer’s Aria repeats short rhythmic cells at often-dizzying speeds, building a dramatic kaleidoscope of percussive sounds, rapid crescendi, and vocal virtuosity. Patricia Alessandrini’s Wie bin ich froh reimagines the haunting song of the same name set by Anton von Webern in 1935, creating a timeless, fragmented musical texture. Liam Flenady’s new work Degrees of Freedom reinterprets his earlier flute solo by expanding it to encompass the entire ensemble.

Kupka’s Piano travels back in space-time to Germany on the verge of WWI to perform one of the masterpieces of musical modernism, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. Based on the poems of Albert Giraud, this work explores the bewitched world of the clown Pierrot as he ruminates on desire, decadence, and death. Part melodrama, part cabaret, part song-cycle, Pierrot Lunaire still captivates audiences and stimulates the imagination today.
A celebration of her son’s life, Chris McNulty’s album Eternal features beautiful treatments of classics re-imagined in a new light. McNulty’s ability to connect powerfully with song lyrics is exquisitely showcased in this album, which brings together the sounds of jazz quintet with a remarkable orchestra. The show ensemble features some of Australia’s finest classical and jazz musicians performing Steve Newcomb’s seamlessly woven, finely crafted orchestrations and promises to be a moving, magical experience.

Kupka’s Piano begins its 2016 season with the ‘elemental dynamism’ of British composer Harrison Birtwistle’s iconic piano-percussion duo The Axe Manual and the Australian premiere of Polish composer Jagoda Szmytka’s Just before after. The concert will also feature the world premiere of not one but three new works, including new pieces by young Australian composers Liam Flenady and Jakob Bragg, as well as one by one of Kupka’s two flautists, Jodie Rottle.
